Big, Bold, Unmistakable: Tonya June Rafael. Navajo "Queen of Clusters".

Tonya June Rafael is a celebrated Navajo (Diné) silversmith whose bold, intricate jewelry reflects both deep cultural roots and a striking contemporary voice. She is originally from the Blackwater/Prewitt area near Gallup, New Mexico, where she continues to live and work, drawing inspiration from the landscapes and traditions of the Southwest.

Early Life & Learning the Craft

Rafael’s journey into silversmithing began at a young age, shaped by family tradition. Raised by her maternal grandparents—both skilled silversmiths—she was immersed in the craft from childhood. By around eight years old, curiosity led her to begin experimenting at the workbench, learning foundational techniques like soldering while observing and assisting her grandparents.

This hands-on, generational learning is deeply rooted in Navajo culture, where silversmithing has been passed down through families since the 19th century. Rafael carries that lineage forward, blending inherited knowledge with her own artistic evolution.

She began creating jewelry professionally in the early 2000s and has since built a respected name in the Native art world, exhibiting at major juried shows and institutions across the country.

Signature Style & Artistic Voice

Tonya June Rafael is widely known for her unmistakable style—often referred to as bold, vibrant, and highly detailed. She has earned the nickname “Queen of Clusters” for her masterful use of clustered stonework, where multiple stones are carefully arranged into dramatic, eye-catching compositions.

Her work frequently features:

  • Intricate cluster designs with precise bezel settings

  • A rich mix of natural stones including turquoise, coral, lapis, spiny oyster, and more

  • Traditional Navajo forms such as naja pendants and squash blossom necklaces, reimagined with bold scale and color

  • Heavy sterling silver construction with detailed stampwork and dimensional elements

While rooted in tradition, her designs feel modern and expressive—balancing heritage with individuality. Many of her pieces are large, statement-making works that showcase both technical skill and artistic confidence.

Legacy & Recognition

Rafael’s jewelry is known for being one-of-a-kind, reflecting both the individuality of the stones she selects and the care she puts into each design. She has shown her work at prestigious venues such as the Heard Museum, the Smithsonian, and the Santa Fe Indian Market—solidifying her place among leading contemporary Native artists.

Her work stands as a continuation of Navajo silversmithing traditions while pushing creative boundaries, making each piece not just adornment—but wearable art with cultural depth and personal story.
